HISTORIC AND BOTANIC GARDEN BURSARY SCHEME - STRENGTHENING THE UK'S HORTICULTURAL HERITAGE

Intermediate Nomenclature and Plant Identification

Intermediate Nomenclature and Plant Identification

Intermediate Nomenclature and Plant Identification

Susyn has designed the course to be of value to all garden staff working in the front line when it comes to dealing with plant queries from the general public. The idea is to provide information behind the labels and to link together what knowledge the participants have, correct what they think they have or have forgotten and provide helpful pointers.

The day will consist of a morning centred in the classroom looking at the cultivated plant and relevant definitions, e.g. cultivar, clone, Group, trademark, PBR’s (Plant Breeders Rights), etc. Commercial plant labels and catalogues are examined. Relevant useful committees and organisations are discussed. Simple and not so simple plant keys are tried out. Handouts are provided. The afternoon walk about cements the foundation of knowledge explored in the morning, putting the theory into practice.

Feedback from previous Master Class attendees...

"I just wanted to let you know how fantastic the course was yesterday.

Susyn Andrews was brilliant at putting the subject across and so knowledgable too. She also had a natural ability to tune in to each of us and know what we were individually trying to get from the day - a real art to do that in such a short time of meeting us all.

The course exceeded my expectations and helped me with a number of aspects for my upcoming exams. I feel so much more confident now.

Fingers crossed now for a question on Nomenclature or Taxonomy in my exam!"
